What this document is

สัญญาซื้อขายรถยนต์ is a private written agreement in Thai for the sale of a used car between two individuals. It is not a government form: the template is published by Carro Thailand.

It records the parties, the car, the price and the payment method, and states that the car and the money change hands on the day of signing. On its own it does not transfer the registration: the change of owner is registered with the Department of Land Transport (DLT).

What the agreement contains

  • place and date of signing (year in the Buddhist Era, พ.ศ.);
  • seller and buyer: title, name, age, address, Thai ID card number (a foreigner gives the passport number) and the issuing authority;
  • the car: type per registration book, make, model, year, transmission, colour, plate number, engine and chassis numbers;
  • price in figures and in words, payment in cash or by cheque (bank, branch, cheque number);
  • names of the parties and two witnesses under the signatures.

What is usually attached

  • a copy of the vehicle registration book (คู่มือจดทะเบียนรถ) — per the agreement it forms part of it;
  • copies of the parties’ ID cards or passports;
  • for the transfer at DLT — documents per the office’s list; a foreigner usually needs proof of address in Thailand (a letter from immigration or an embassy).

Check the exact document list, fees and processing time with the DLT office where the car is registered.

Important caveats

  • The template is written for a car (รถยนต์); it is sometimes used for motorcycles, but the wording still refers to a car.
  • Clause 2 of the template reads “ผู้ขายได้ชำระเงิน” (“the seller has paid”) — a typo in the original template; in substance the buyer pays. We do not change the form text.
  • The agreement is signed in two copies; on each one the parties write by hand whose copy it is (ผู้ขาย or ผู้ซื้อ).
  • The price in Thai words (in brackets under the price, e.g. “สี่แสนสองหมื่นบาทถ้วน” for 420,000) is written by hand at signing — check it against the figures.
  • This is not legal advice. For a large amount or a dispute, consult a lawyer.

  4. Print two copies and sign them together with the witnesses.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official government form?

No. It is a private contract template by Carro Thailand. The state does not require this exact text, but a written agreement protects both parties.

Does the car pass to the buyer once the agreement is signed?

Under the agreement ownership passes on the day of signing, but the owner in the registration book changes only after the transfer at the Department of Land Transport (DLT).

Can a foreigner sign this agreement?

Yes. In the identity-document box a foreigner gives the passport number instead of a Thai ID card. For the DLT transfer, proof of address in Thailand is usually needed as well — check with the office.

Are witnesses needed?

The template provides for the signatures of two witnesses. Their names can be filled in beforehand or written by hand at signing.

Which year goes into the date of the agreement?

A Thai contract uses the Buddhist Era (2026 → 2569). FoxDocs converts it automatically.

Does the template work for a motorcycle?

The template text is written for a car (รถยนต์). It is sometimes used for motorcycles, but it is better to check with the DLT or a lawyer whether such a contract is suitable.
