What this document is

TM.87 (ตม.87 คำขอรับการตรวจลงตรา, Application for Visa) is the application of a foreigner who is already in Thailand asking to be granted a Non-Immigrant visa (ประเภทคนอยู่ชั่วคราว). It is typically used to change a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry to a Non-Immigrant visa without leaving the country.

The form is bilingual (Thai and English), two pages, addressed to the Immigration Officer.

Who files it and where

  • a foreigner who entered Thailand on another visa or visa-exempt and wants a Non-Immigrant visa (for example, marriage to a Thai national, retirement, work or study);
  • it is submitted at the immigration office responsible for your area of residence; whether a change is possible in your case and to which category — check with the office;
  • according to the form, the application must be made in person;
  • the form states a fee of 2,000 baht which is not refunded if the application is refused; check the current fee with the office.

What the form asks for

  • the immigration office and the date of application (Buddhist Era year, พ.ศ.);
  • title (Mr./Mrs./Miss — circled), family name, first name, middle name, age, date and place of birth, nationality;
  • passport number, date and place of issue, expiry date;
  • current visa, mode of transport, where you arrived from, port and date of arrival, TM.6 arrival card number (if any);
  • the reason why you need a Non-Immigrant visa;
  • your address in Thailand and the details of the person who wrote the application (usually the applicant);
  • signature or right thumb print — by hand; a 4×6 cm photo is pasted on.

Documents usually brought along

  • passport and copies of the photo page, current visa and last entry stamp;
  • one 4×6 cm photo (there is a box for it on the form);
  • documents supporting the reason (for example a marriage certificate, pension and financial documents, a letter from the employer or school) — the list depends on the visa category;
  • proof of address, such as the TM.30 notification receipt.

Check the exact list of documents and their requirements with the immigration office before you apply.
