What this document is

C-234 (“Solicitud de prestación de nacimiento y cuidado de menor”) is the official form of Spain’s National Social Security Institute (INSS). It claims the benefit paid during leave for the birth of a child, adoption, guardianship for adoption, foster care or tutelage. The benefit replaces your earnings while you stop working to care for the child.

Each parent applies separately: both the mother who gave birth and the other parent.

Who applies and how

  • employees and self-employed workers (autónomos) insured with Social Security — foreigners included;
  • online — on the Social Security electronic office with a digital certificate or Cl@ve;
  • without an e-signature — the printed and signed form by post or at an INSS centre (CAISS) by appointment (cita previa);
  • if you refuse consent to data checks, you must bring the documents within 10 working days.

What you state

  • details of the applicant and the other parent (NIE/DNI, Social Security number);
  • the event: birth, surrogacy, adoption, guardianship, foster care — its date and number of children;
  • leave dates: the six weeks after birth are taken at once and full-time; the rest can be spread;
  • a bank account (IBAN; for residents abroad, a foreign account with BIC/SWIFT) held by the applicant — without these details the benefit is not paid.

How the form is laid out

Nine pages: applicant and representatives, reason, applicable statute, leave dates, tax data, bank account, consents and signature; then a page for INSS notes and instructions. FoxDocs types your data into the fields of the official PDF without changing its layout: the IBAN is split into boxes and your name and NIE repeat in every page header.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner get this benefit?

Yes, if they work and are insured with Spanish Social Security. Nationality does not matter.

Do both parents apply?

Yes, each parent files their own C-234 and receives their own benefit.

Can I apply without a digital signature?

Yes: print it, sign it and send it by post or take it to an INSS centre by appointment.

Do I need a Spanish bank account?

For payment in Spain, yes — an IBAN in the applicant’s name. People living abroad have a separate section with BIC/SWIFT.

What is a “familia monoparental”?

A family where one parent raises the child alone. It affects the length of leave: under RDL 9/2025, 32 weeks instead of 19. The amount of the benefit does not depend on it.

What if I do not consent to data checks?

Then INSS cannot obtain the documents itself, and you must bring them within 10 working days.

Do I fill in page 5?

No. It is a page for INSS notes on required documents; applicants leave it blank.
